A year of flying over London: aerial photographer shares collection of his favourite images from above the capital in last 12 months

London aerial photographer Jason Hawkes has showcased a series of some of the capital's most spectacular sights from above in pictures he shot over the last year.

The photographer specialises in photography from helicopters and has captured stunning images of the capital in the last 12 months.

From shoppers at Oxford Circus, London’s skyline and swimmers in the city’s lidos during the summer’s heatwave, Mr Hawkes' photography showcases some of the best sights London has to offer.

His shots documented some of London’s milestones in the calendar year including the London Marathon, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and Christmas lights across the capital.

Shocking pictures of London’s parks last summer show the extent of the long heatwave the capital basked in.

But Mr Hawkes said the hot weather had provided good conditions and visibility for taking the incredible pictures this year.

He said: “It’s been a good year for it, it’s been really clear and the weather has been amazing.

“It really was an amazing summer for it.”

Mr Hawkes said:

Of all his photos this year, Mr Hawkes said his favourite was an image of London where a view of the BT tower and Canary Wharf is visible in the same photo.

He said: “That photo’s my favourite because it’s so clear. It’s taken on a really long lens, so everything almost looks close together, when of course it’s not, and looks a bit weird”.

Mr Hawkes said he has been photographing the city for 20 years now, and has seen a number of changes in that time, but believes he’s seen the most development in the last two years.

For 2019, Mr Hawkes said he will start by taking photos of White City and the development taking place there.

“London’s changing so much,” he said.

Mr Hawkes, who has authored over 50 books, said the images were shot from between 450ft and 2500ft above London.
