“The rest of Primal Scream were in the main part of the studio where people perform," recalls photographer Jason Joyce, "but Bobby stuck himself on his own in the room where they read the news. He wanted to make sure he could hear his voice above the band. There were newsreaders sitting around, Bobby banging out this song, and they carried on tapping away at their keyboards. It worked.” Photograph: Jason Joyce

“I’ve probably photographed Gilles every year since 1992,” says Joyce. “I could see he got on really well with Laura, and her session on the show was one of those moments. Flawless. Here, last February, she’s just been on stage and she’s finished performing. In a corridor, Gilles put his arms around her – his gesture is along the lines of, ‘Well what do you think about THAT then.’ It was a beautiful performance.” Photograph: Jason Joyce

"I suppose it seemed like the right time for a party," DJ Lauren Laverne says of 6 Music's new music festival, which starts in Manchester on Friday. The BBC station, once under threat, has enjoyed a good year, with listener figures rising to almost 2m. "The fact that the listeners fought so hard to save the station [in 2010] had a galvanising effect on us. It focused us, taught us what the strengths of the station are." Photograph: Jason Joyce

"This is in one of the old recording rooms at Maida Vale," says Joyce. "The Manics did a gig for 140 people. It was like being in a front room, a really special thing. And the Manics aren't a quiet band. My ears were seriously pinging." Photograph: Jason Joyce

“This is the band in the studio where the BBC Philharmonic rehearse," says Joyce. "The room has got more history than you can imagine, and being associated with orchestral, composed pieces of genius, it seemed a fitting space for Sigur Rós to play. During their set last October I hardly took any pictures – it was such an amazing performance I just wanted to experience it.” Photograph: Jason Joyce

Joyce: "It was Red Nose Day last march and [6 Music breakfast DJ] Shaun Keaveny decided to raise some money by having himself waxed live on air. I think Lauren and Jennifer are supposed to be dressed as beauticians; they’re about to administer the torture. Shaun didn’t howl when it happened actually – he took it well." Photograph: Jason Joyce
