'A void': Emergency warning issued as sinkhole appears in major Glasgow road

A WARNING has been issued after a “sinkhole” opened beneath a major road in Glasgow city centre, prompting emergency repairs.

Scottish Water alerted the public on Sunday morning that Cowcaddens Road, which runs between Buchanan Street Bus Station and Glasgow Caledonian University, had been closed to all traffic westbound after a “void” opened up below the carriageway.

Scottish Water warned that it is “impossible to say how long these emergency works” will need to be in place, but that people travelling through the city centre were likely to face “significant delays” for their duration.

The sinkhole is close to the junction with Hope Street, which is also facing traffic restrictions as a result.

Scottish Water said: “We are carrying out emergency repairs after a sinkhole was discovered on Cowcaddens Road in Glasgow city centre.

“A void has opened up beneath the carriageway close to the junction with Hope Street.

“The road had already been reduced to one lane in each direction for street improvement works being carried out by a third party but is now closed completely to westbound traffic from its junction with Port Dundas Road and West Nile Street.

Traffic heading north on Hope Street – which is already reduced to two lanes because of ongoing street improvement works – can only turn right towards Port Dundas Road/West Nile Street.

“Diversions are in place and drivers are being asked to follow all signs.”

“At this moment in time it is impossible to say how long these emergency works and associated roadworks will be in place. However, we will work as quickly as safety allows to complete the works at the earliest opportunity.

“While we appreciate the work is likely to cause significant delays to road users, everyone’s safety – our engineers and the public – is an absolute priority.

“People should consider using public transport if travelling into the city centre, find another route or allow plenty of extra time.

“We would like to thank all those affected for their patience and understanding. All businesses are open as usual.”
