In today’s Totally Normal and Fine sports news, let’s take it over to the Pac-12 where a college student was reportedly arrested this week for having too much Utah in her.
According to KSL.com, a University of Utah student is being investigated over a Yik Yak post she allegedly made before the Utes’ Sept. 17 game against San Diego State in which she threatened to detonate a nuclear reactor on campus if her team lost. (Utah won handily, 35-7).
While it was likely — hopefully! — a joke, this is one of a handful of recent incidents on Yik Yak’s platform involving bomb threats on college campuses by users who say they weren’t being serious. A different University of Utah student was arrested for posting about the same nuclear reactor back in August, and just last week a Western Kentucky University student was arrested for a bomb-related post about campus construction. Users are encouraged to report any suspicious activity they see on the app (and should also be encouraged NOT to use it as a place to get your jokes off about nuclear destruction, but I digress).
Yik Yak is a community billboard app that shut down in 2017 and relaunched in 2021. It allows users to anonymously engage with others within a 5-mile radius, hence its popularity on college campuses.
