A third of Brits wish they had a different first name - with Jack and Lily the top choice

If you feel stuck with a name you do not like, you are not alone… it seems a third of us hate what we are called.

And lots of people would rather have another name, with Jack, Lily, Sophia, Max and Willow topping the list of preferred alternatives.

A study found 40% of those quizzed prefer to use a nickname and 7% go by something completely different to what is on their birth certificate.

Around 11% make a point of telling everyone to call them something else and 3% have officially changed their names by deed poll.

The reasons people gave for disliking their moniker include it is old fashioned, it doesn’t suit me, it is too common and it is no longer cool.

Others told how they were mercilessly teased at school about what they were called and some said their name is just too hard to pronounce.

Many are so angry with their parents over what they are called, with 6% falling out with mums and dads over it.

When it comes to social media, 18% of people who took part in the study said they use a different name. The study was launched to mark the rebrand of Jurys Inn Hotels to Leonardo Hotels.

Leonardo Hotels UK & Ireland managing director Jason Carruthers said: “It’s surprising to see that so many Brits prefer to be called by a different name as they feel like their given one doesn’t suit them.

“We have in fact just been through the process.”
