A sequel to the Mel Brooks comedy Spaceballs is officially in the works with Josh Gad

The Schwartz is strong with this movie sequel news… at least we hope so.

Per Variety, a sequel to the 1980s Mel Brooks spoof comedy Spaceballs is officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

Josh Gad will star in the film and produce with Brooks, and he helped write the screenplay with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Strays and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar director Josh Greenbaum will helm the project.

The original film starred Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Joan Rivers and Brooks in the widely beloved parody of 20th century sci-fi films, primarily the original Star Wars trilogy.

Brooks recently brought History of the World, Part II to life at Hulu as a miniseries, and he’s overseen Broadway adaptations of his films like The Producers and Young Frankenstein. This will be the first official film sequel to any of his directorial projects, however.

Gad teased his involvement in the project earlier this month on Instagram, saying: “Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited.”

There’s no word when we’ll be able to beam this sequel up just yet.
