A second season of Disney+ hit Obi-Wan Kenobi could be in the works - if fans want it

Though the final episode of Jedi epic Obi-Wan Kenobi only dropped this week, there are already murmurings about a potential second series.

The show, starring Ewan McGregor as an older, wiser Obi-Wan (and set before the events of A New Hope), drew praise for McGregor’s performance and the way it developed the Star Wars universe.

Following the show’s epic finale, fans are clamouring for news of a second series. And Lucasfilm seems inclined to give it to them. The production company’s president, Kathleen Kennedy, told Entertainment Tonight that one could potentially be in the works.

“Frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series,” she said. “But I think if there’s huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us.

“And if we feel like, ‘OK, there’s a real reason to do this; it’s answering the why then,’ then we’ll do it. But we’ll see.”

It’s no surprise that fans are so keen: the series served up plenty of jaw-dropping fights and cameos from some of the franchise’s most beloved (or infamous) actors. Hayden Christensen memorably made his first appearance as Star Wars’ uber-villain Darth Vader since the end of Revenge of the Sith – something he said he enjoyed doing.

“Being in the costume again was incredible. It’s an amazing, iconic costume, and it imparts a lot of feeling when you put it on,” he told Radio Times.

"For me, it was a very emotional experience and very cathartic, in a lot of ways."

Fortunately, he is also keen for a second season.

"Well, it was definitely conceived as a standalone story. But I would love to continue with this character," he added. "You know, I think there’s certainly more there to explore and I would be so excited to get to do so.”

Ewan McGregor has agreed, telling GQ Magazine that he “really hoped” that another season would come along. "If I could do one of these every now and again — I’d just be happy about it."

Liam Neeson also made a surprise appearance as Obi-Wan’s mentor Qui-Gon Jinn in the season finale - as a Force ghost, naturally. He died at the end of The Phantom Menace.

"I was beginning to think you’d never come," Obi-Wan tells him as he heads off into the desert to find a new home. "I was always here, Obi-Wan,” Jinn replies. “You just were not ready to see. Come on. We’ve got a ways to go."

Fingers crossed, we do too.
