'A sea of faces' - Howard Wilkinson reflects on Leeds United's title celebrations 30 years on

Leeds United mark the 30th anniversary of the day they sealed the Division One title on Tuesday, April 26. The Whites defeated Sheffield United 3-2 in a difficult away fixture, before Manchester United were seen off 2-0 at Liverpool to hand the final Division One title to the Whites, in the final season before the start of the Premier League.

Leeds' title-winning manager - and still the last Englishman to win the top division - has spoken to the Mirror about how the day unfolded as the team waited for news from Anfield. Wilkinson revealed that he wasn't watching the Manchester United game, despite the knowledge that if they failed to win, his side would be champions of England.

"We were having Sunday dinner when our son Ben came downstairs from his bedroom, where he had been watching Liverpool-Man United, and said excitedly ‘Dad, we’ve just won the league! Our quiet celebration got bigger as people started to come. One of the early ones round was Dave Bassett and his wife to say well done."

It was the next day that Wilkinson really focused on, as he and the team got to celebrate with thousands of Leeds fans at the civic reception. He said: "The most memorable thing was the civic reception the next day, just looking down on a sea of faces, unbelievable.

"We left the ground in the bus and it was quite a subdued journey at first, but the nearer we got to the centre, the clearer it became why because everyone was jammed into that square."
