A Place in the Sun star presenters look glamorous on TV – but behind the scenes it’s a different story.
One of the hosts, Lucy Alexander, recently started working on the Channel 4 show after 13 years presenting the BBC ’s Homes Under The Hammer.
Although she is loving her new job, the 53-year-old revealed the grim reality of filming in the sun all week.
While it might look like the show is shot in one day, Lucy said it actually takes around five days to put together an episode.
So this means she has to wear the same outfit every day for almost a week!
Asked what is was like filming every day in the blazing heat, Lucy told the Daily Star : “Well you wear the same dress every single day on the beach.
“People think it’s all happening in one day – but it’s actually over five days – so by the end of the week I’m absolutely reeking!”
Mum-of-two Lucy joined A Place in the Sun in January and now presents alongside property experts such as Laura Hamilton, Jasmine Harman and Scarlette Douglas.
Jonnie Irwin was another big presenter who fronted the show, but the 49-year-old was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2020 after it spread to his brain.
At the time he was given six months to live, but recently managed to appear at an A Place in the Sun event in Manchester.
Explaining how lucky she feels to be working on the show, Lucy said she ‘didn’t expect any of this to happen’.
But she says with her children being 25 and 19, she feels her new job has come at the right time in her life, as she is able to travel at the drop of the hat.
“My kids are older. They’re both independent, they’ve both got their own lives. I’m free so I can go, ‘Bye, see you in a week!’ she shared.
Describing it as her ‘dream job’, she told the Daily Expres : “They called me on a Friday and I was out in Spain by the Sunday.”
Lucy continued: “I had no preparation. No time to plan outfits, hair, blowdry or fake tan. It was like off you go. But it’s my bag and I know it.
“It was almost like I swapped subsidence for sun. That was what I’d done. I’d swapped the grotty damp for sunshine.”
The property star admitted her first episode on A Place in the Sun didn’t exactly go to plan either – as she ended up being caught in a sandstorm.
When she arrived in Spain she was also treated to torrential rain, which wasn’t quite what she was expecting.
But despite the initial hitch, Lucy says the show is definitely an ‘upgrade’ from what she was doing before.
Lucy left Homes Under The Hammer in 2016. Before landing the A Place in the Sun gig she hosted Best of Both Worlds, Lost and Found, Bang on Budget and The Customer is Always Right.
*A Place In The Sun airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 4pm
