A Place in the Sun's Jonnie Irwin 'overwhelmed' by support after cancer diagnosis

A Place in the Sun star Jonnie Irwin is "overwhelmed" by "kind messages" after he announced his terminal cancer diagnosis. The TV property star says he doesn't know how long he has left to live.

The father-of-three was diagnosed two years ago but kept his illness private until now. In an interview with Hello magazine, he made his diagnosis public and was flooded with messages of support.

He has now posted to Instagram to say he is "overwhelmed" with support and that he is getting around to reading all the messages. Jonnie said: "Overwhelmed by your kind messages, not had the chance to read them all yet but I assure you I will. Yesterday needed some headspace so I escaped to the country with my brother in law and his dog. It was a tonic. xx"

This post received support with Jonnie's Escape to the Country co-star and BBC Radio Two presenter commenting three red love heart emojis and his fellow Escape to the Country co-star Sonali Saha commenting: "Glad you found time for an escape" followed by a blue love heart emoji.

The host of Channel 4’s A Place In The Sun and the BBC’s Escape To The Country, revealed his lung cancer had spread to his brain. Now the 48-year-old hopes sharing his diagnosis will inspire others to "make the most of every day".

Irwin said the first warning sign of his illness came while he was filming A Place In The Sun in August 2020 in Italy, when his vision became blurry while driving. “Within a week of flying back from filming, I was being given six months to live,” he said.

“I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much. That was devastating. All I could do was apologise to her. I felt so responsible."
