A Place in the Sun's Craig Rowe makes big gamble which buyers 'loathe'

Craig Rowe took a risk on Thursday's A Place in the Sun but it didn't work out for him.

Nick and Rose were looking for a holiday home on the Caribbean island of Barbados. With a budget of £550,000 Channel 4's Craig was on hand to help them find their dream property.

The couple hoped for a property with a veranda and a swimming pool or enough space to have one installed. They wanted three bedrooms minimum and two bathrooms, with a 15 minute walk to the beach and local amenities.

Craig warned: "A typical three bed detatched house with a large garden and short drive to the beach starts at around £600,000 so if Nick and Rose want a slice of this luxury lifestyle I think they'll be using most, if not all, of their budget."

He added that the couple have a "healthy" budget but thanks to the likes of Simon Cowell living nearby it can be an expensive area. Luckily the buyers also had wiggle room of up to £600,000.

The first property shown - a three bedroom bungalow - was a no go as it didn't have a pool. It was also noisy with traffic going by outside.

The second property was a bit more promising as it had a fabulous decking area complete with dining set, BBQ and a plunge pool with a beautiful view. But it was at the top end of their budget, on the market at £593,284 and they thought it didn't have enough character to meet their expectations.

Next up, the pool situation was improving and the couple seemed to finally have a contender. For the fourth property, Craig wanted to make a "gamble".

He took them to a five bedroomed house with four-and-a-half bathrooms. It was on the market for £667,910 but the owner was willing to negotiate to bring the price to within the couple's wiggle room budget.

Craig admitted: "This is a gamble, a complete gamble. It's completely different to anything I have shown them. It will be interesting to see how this plays out."

But it didn't seem to work in his favour as Nick said: "Well there's one major problem for me. I absolutely loathe polished concrete." Rose added that the home was in the wrong place and was bad location wise as she said: "It's not doing it for us".

The final property ticked all of their boxes but was on the market for a whopping £746,269 - almost £200,000 more than their original budget. They decided not to move forward with that property and said that the property with the plunge pool was their main choice.

But overall they decided not to make any offers and put the experience down as a "learning curve".
