Jonnie Irwin has addressed concerned fans who were worried that he might be starving himself as part of a new diet in his battle against terminal cancer and assured them that is not the case.

The 49-year-old A Place in the Sun and Escape to the Country presenter recently revealed he was undergoing a “bloody hard” new eating regime, which has given him hope after doctors told him that the cancer, which started in his lungs, has now spread to his brain.

Taking to Instagram, he explained how the diet worked the person behind it, Jane McLelland, as “an inspiration”.

He wrote: “Her story is truly an inspiration and in my opinion a must-read for anyone affected by cancer.

“It’s inspired me to change my lifestyle and importantly given me hope in an otherwise hopeless situation. Don’t get me wrong – it’s bloody hard, but I’m on board!”

The dad-of-three’s words alarmed some followers, who took it to mean that he was starving himself.

He then clarified the situation in a follow-up post alongside a picture example of some of the food he was eating, writing: “For those who are worried that I’m starving myself, don’t worry. I’m not. I’m trying to starve a tumour by blocking its feeding pathways, by taking ‘off label’ drugs as well as a tailored diet – losing weight is deffo not the aim! Satisfied, his fans responded positively with some even asking him to share more of the types of food he was eating to inspire them.

“Ooh could you post more of your meal pics? Very interested on how this works and what you eat, amazing. Keep on keeping on,” one wrote.

“Jonnie, just do whatever you have to do. Stay with us, we love you,” penned another.
