New Delhi: A peace accord between a faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), and the Central and Assam governments is all set to be signed this evening in the national capital in presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The accord will take care of several economic, and social issues concerning Assam, besides providing cultural safeguards and land rights to the indigenous people, said an official.
The insurgent group ULFA came into being in April 1979 in the aftermath of an agitation against undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan). The illegal influx in Assam has been on, though with varying degrees, ever since India's independence.
The hardline faction of the ULFA led by Paresh Baruah will not be part of the agreement as he has been consistently rejecting the olive branch offered by the government. (Agencies)
