With a recent influx of nicknames in the NBA, some Thunder fans began workshopping ideas to name the duo of Russell Westbrook and Paul George.
On his own, Westbrook has become known as “The Brodie” to some around the NBA, while George has a few nicknames: “PG-13,” “Young Trece” and “Playoff P.”
But, as a duo, there appears to be a winner in the clubhouse: “R-PG.”
As discussed at great length recently on Reddit, the “R-PG” nickname appears to be a hit among fans given the popularity of the abbreviation among video gamers and its military use: rocket-propelled-grenade.
The creator of the nickname is still being determined but some believe the moniker first surfaced on Reddit, while others claim to have seen the name first in the comments section of a Slam Magazine Instagram post.
In any case, the “R-PG” nickname is becoming a hit, which could revitalize the practice of naming NBA duos.
Of course, Golden State Warriors teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson have been referred to as “The Splash Brothers” for quite some time now. Tobias Harris and Boban Marjanovic from the Philadelphia 76ers have become known as “Bobi and Tobi” since their time together with the Detroit Pistons.
While “Bobi and Tobi” have become popular around the NBA due to their playful friendship, Westbrook and George are starting to become quite close as well. The two were seen during All-Star Weekend attending various events together and their chemistry during the All-Star Game was on full display.
Thunder newcomer Markieff Morris says it’s genuine between the two:
You can tell that it’s genuine between those guys. I told those guys when I was talking to them, the whole organization you can tell is a family atmosphere. Those two guys, in general, are doing it on both ends of the court. They pride themselves on going hard. P.G. is on another level. Russ has been on another level. P.G. is top-three MVP right now in my eyes.
The nickname is still in the beginning stages but it seems as though Westbrook and George have a pseudonym that is here to stay — at least for now.
