To our longtime readers, you’ll have last clocked my name in the credits as editor-in-chief in 2015. For those who are a little newer to the party, before that, I was editor of Crikey.
I relished my original stint here. Since then, I’ve worked across the media, arts and publishing sectors and print, online, broadcast and TV. I want to bring some of those insights, not to mention the writers and journalists I’ve encountered as part of that work, into the Crikey stable.
As a reader I’ve watched Crikey grow in readership, clout and fearlessness. Working outside of this publication has led to an even keener appreciation for how precious its genuine independence truly is.
I want to continue to blend the investigative chops that readers clearly value with Crikey’s distinctive personality and capitalise on you — the people who subscribe to Crikey. You’re a pretty unique bunch — a group of people committed to supporting independent media who also happen to be extremely well connected and informed.
We know you want to be part of something that consistently pokes a stick at power – and alongside Crikey’s newly appointed editor, the formidable Gina Rushton, and the entire team, we intend to honour that. To kick off conversations, and to start necessary fights. We’re also excited to appoint Jack Callil as our new opinion editor to ensure Crikey is a destination for this country’s best writers and thinkers — both as readers and contributors.
The country is facing some enormous challenges this year. It’s an essential time to highlight hypocrisy. Gina and I are ready to get stuck in to ensure Crikey continues to call out Canberra, corporations and the media to scrutinise the gap between what they say and what they actually do.
