A man remains on top of a crane in Salford this afternoon as his protest enters a second day. The man scaled the huge Heyrod crane just off Chapel Street in, Salford at around 5am yesterday morning (Monday).
Police and fire crews attended the scene near near Manchester city centre with locals saying officers spent all of yesterday trying to communicate with him. However nearby residents say the man told officers he was not coming down and that he could stay up there for at least a week.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the man remains on the crane and that officers remain at the scene alongside other emergency services.
"GMP were made aware of aware of a man carrying out a protest on a crane near Ford Street, Salford, that started at about 5am on 13 June 2022" a spokesman said.
"We have had a police presence at the scene ever since and are working alongside other emergency services to communicate with the man to bring this matter to a safe and peaceful conclusion."

It has not been confirmed exactly what the man is protesting against but banners hanging from the crane appear to refer to the handling of an alleged racist attack.
One person living nearby said yesterday that workmen at the site where the crane is situated were sent home as officers moved in. Drones were also spotted circulating in the area.
“He has been shouting down to police and people saying he's not coming down and that he can stay up there for at least a week," one witness said.
