A man was shot by police in the carpark of Manning Base Hospital in New South Wales today.
The situation began around lunchtime when police received reports at 12:25 pm of a man firing shots into the air in Wingham, located approximately 10km from Taree. Officers were dispatched to the area to investigate the reports.
At 12:55 pm, police located the man in the hospital carpark. According to a statement from NSW Police, he allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers during their engagement.
“During the engagement, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police,” the statement read.
Despite immediate medical assistance provided by officers and paramedics, the man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Manning Base Hospital.
No officers or other individuals were injured during this incident.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, but he is believed to be in his thirties. In response to the shooting, a critical incident investigation team has been assigned to look into the circumstances surrounding the event.
“A critical incident investigation team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident,” police confirmed.
Additionally, an independent review will be conducted about the situation.
