Alright people, it’s time to break out the Zooper Doopers and crank up those crusty old fans because this weekend is about to get majorly hot.
Strap in, because south-east Australia is about to cop a heatwave that will make you regret ever buying natural deodorant. We’re talking some spots set to sizzle above 40°C. Mother Nature has really decided to throw the whole country into an air fryer.
Here are all the details for each state affected.
Victoria
Melbourne is set for its hottest weekend in a decade, with temperatures expected to hit 37 to 38°C on Saturday and Sunday. If both days breach 37.8°C, it’ll be the city’s warmest weekend since 2014 according to Weatherzone.
So, if you thought your plans for starting your ‘new year, new me‘ running goals this weekend were a good idea, think again. You might want to swap that for a Netflix binge in your air-conditioned living room instead.
Inland areas like Mildura and Shepparton are bracing for even more intense heat, with forecasts suggesting they could reach 41°C. That’s not just hot, that’s “why did I even step outside?” hot.
There are also the extreme fire danger warnings — fire bans are in place across many regions as the risk of bushfires escalates. This includes in the Wimmera and South West district(s) of Victoria.
New South Wales
Sydney is also feeling the heat, with temperatures expected to climb into the mid-30s. But don’t let that fool you; western suburbs like Penrith are set to experience the real scorcher, potentially nudging 40°C on Sunday and Monday.
The coastal areas might enjoy slightly cooler temperatures, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook entirely. Expect humidity levels to rise, making it feel hotter than it actually is.
The most intense heat will be in Albury, Batemans Bay, Bega, Braidwood, Bombala, Eden, Nowra and Narrandera, as reported by 9News.
And further down in the ACT? You’re not escaping either — Canberra has forecasted highs of around 35°C, however heatwave warnings for the territory have not been made.
South Australia
Adelaide is forecast to reach about 36°C on Friday and Saturday, with inland areas like Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend potentially hitting the low-to-mid 40s.
The state is gearing up for a serious sweat session.
Tasmania
Even Tasmania isn’t escaping the warmth this weekend. While most of us might associate Tassie with cooler summer temps, forecasts are predicting highs around 30°C.
“Most places will see temperatures in at least the mid to high 30s,” Miriam Bradbury from the Bureau of Meteorology said, per 9News.
“Even though the temperatures are milder down there, they’re still well above average and that’s what counts.”
So if you were hoping for a breezy getaway filled with cool coastal walks, prepare for some unexpected warmth.
Authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. If you’ve got any plans involving physical exertion — like mowing the lawn or going for a run — now might be a good time to reschedule those for next week when temperatures drop back down to something resembling normal.
If you’re in an area prone to bushfires or extreme heat conditions, now’s the time to review your emergency plans. Stay tuned to local news updates and heed any warnings from authorities about evacuations or safety measures.
So there you have it — this weekend’s forecast is definitely not one for the faint-hearted. Stay safe, stay cool, and maybe invest in a good fan or two!
