A look at every three-peat in sports history as Chiefs try to join the club in the 2025 Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs aim to be the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row when they face the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl on Sunday night in New Orleans.

While no NFL team has managed to win the big one in three straight seasons, the feat is more common (albeit, still rare) in the other professional sports. In total, 15 professional sports franchises have managed a three-peat.

Here’s a full rundown of every pro team to reach the impressive pinnacle of winning three titles in a row, starting with our most recent professional three-peat champion.

NBA: Lakers, Bulls, Celtics

It’s been more than 20 years since we saw a three-peat champion in any professional sport with the last one coming from 2000-02 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Prior to that, the Chicago Bulls did so with Michael Jordan from 1991-93 and again from 1996-98.

Looking back further, the Boston Celtics won an NBA record eight consecutive championships from 1959-66, while the Minneapolis Lakers were the first to three-peat from 1952-54.

MLB: Yankees, Athletics

In baseball, the New York Yankees are one of just two franchises to three-peat. They’ve done so on three separate occasions, most recently from 1998-00. New York also won titles from 1949-53 and 1936-39. The only other team to accomplish that in the MLB was the Oakland Athletics from 1972-74.

NHL: Islanders, Canadiens, Maple Leafs

There have been five three-peat champions in the NHL but none since the 1980s when the New York Islanders won from 1980-83. They’re joined by the Montreal Canadiens (1956-60, 1976-79) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (1947-49, 1956-60).

WNBA: Comets

Only one WNBA team has managed to pull off three titles in a row: the Houston Comets from 1997-00 at the advent of the league. Despite the early success and reaching the postseason in all but three seasons it operated, the Comets dissolved in 2008.
