‘A long wait, humiliation’: Poor public transport means cities stay toxic and unequal

Robust public transport systems can mean fewer vehicles. And fewer vehicles can mean greener neighbourhoods. But in India, public transport is lagging in terms of plugging commuter needs. So commuters are either buying more vehicles or resorting to unsafe public transport.

In states where public transport is subsidised, women say they are humiliated by drivers who do not stop the vehicle for them to board it. Greenpeace India recently came up with a draft policy aimed at free and improved public transport, which can improve the participation of women in the workforce and help decrease air pollution.
