AN independence activist who walked across the Skye Bridge with Saltires more than 300 times has died.
Callum MacDonald — known for crossing the Skye Bridge more than 300 times over five years — passed away at the weekend.
MacDonald crossed from Kyleakin in Skye to the mainland and back every Sunday for over three years, creating a tradition for his local Yes group as well as activists far and wide.
The 74-year-old originally hailed from Harris then lived in Skye for many years before retiring from his NHS post in 2018. Three weeks later he began his own personal journey to raise awareness of the campaign.
The iconic shots of Saltires being flown from the bridge is well-known and much-loved across the movement.
MacDonald said at the time: “I was increasingly furious at the goings on in Westminster and the total abuse of power by the UK government. I started walking on my own and gradually others joined in, with a core of stalwarts who walk with me wind, rain or shine.
“Yes Skye and Lochalsh promote the walk on Facebook, locals and visitors alike toot their horns as they pass us and we’ve had the welcome company of many nationalities.
“Once, we had to shoo on a carload of Catalans who wanted to park on the bridge and join us. We managed to persuade them that it might not be a great idea with the local police station half a mile away, even though we often get a friendly toot from them as well!”
Fellow walker Neil Morison, who continues the action, said: "A gentleman and a true believer in Scottish self determination. I was lucky and honoured to share many a good chat, keeping him company as he walked the Skye Bridge, flag in hand promoting independence".
Yes Skye and Lochalsh coordinator Carole Inglis added:" Callum was a local hero, making The National on a number of occasions with his legendary bridge walks. Thanks must go to Neil Morison for continuing the Sunday ritual long after Callum's health was preventing him from doing the crossing.
"Another lost to the cause before seeing independence for our country. Our sincere condolences to Annette and family".
MacDonald is survived by his partner Annette Kerr and their family.
