A-level results: How to appeal Northern Ireland grades

Thousands of anxious and excited students across Northern Ireland receive their A-Level results this Thursday, August 18.

This year's tests returned to normality after the school calendar was severely disrupted over the last two years across Northern Ireland due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Large parts of that time saw children home-schooled with teachers conducting lessons over Zoom.

However, some students may be unhappy with their A Level grades, but thankfully there are ways to appeal the grades you receive.

What if you want to appeal your results?

If you have a question about your Summer 2022 results or you think the results you have received are not correct, don’t worry – there are things you can do.

Your school or college may request one of the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment CCEA’s Post-Results Services on your behalf.

Your first point of contact should be your school or college for advice and guidance.

Centre Review

CCEA will check whether there were any administrative errors or if procedures were missed in marking your examination paper.

Review of Marking

A CCEA Senior Examiner will review the marking of an externally assessed component/unit. This includes a clerical re-check and a breakdown of marks for that component/unit.

Priority Review Service

For students who have a higher education place on hold, CCEA offers a priority review of marking service. If you would like to request this service, it is important that you inform your school or college as soon as possible. The deadline for them to request a priority review is 25 August 2022.

Your grade could go up, go down or stay the same following a clerical re-check or review of marking.

Access to Scripts

Your school can request a copy of your exam paper. (Note that if CCEA’s quality assurance review identifies an error before CCEA issues a copy of your paper, this may result in a change of mark.)For more details, including deadlines and Post-Results Service fees, see the CCEA Post-Results Services summary document.

Is there a fee for making an appeal?

Following a return to the normal process of examinations, the usual script review fees will be in place for Summer 2022 and following. More information on CCEA’s Post-Results Services, including fees, can be viewed here.

A fee will not be charged for these services in the following circumstances:

  • If the script review results in a change to an overall subject grade (up or down) when a student has cashed in. No charge will apply to any units requested for the subject.
  • If the script review results in a change to the notional unit grade (up or down). No charge will apply to the individual unit only.

If you are unhappy with the outcome of Post-Results Services, your school or college can submit an appeal to CCEA.

An appeal must come from your school’s Examinations Officer, as they are best informed to arrange an appeal on behalf of their students. This is normal practice for all awarding organisations.

If an appeal is requested following a review, this service is free of charge.

Your grade could go up, go down or stay the same following an appeal.

The CCEA has set up a dedicated results helpline to offer advice and guidance to students receiving their summer 2022 results.

On A level results day this Thursday, 18 August, the helpline will open at 8am. From Friday 19 August to Friday 9 September, the helpline will be in operation from 9am until 5pm.

Anyone with queries regarding CCEA results can call 028 9026 1260 , email helpline@ccea.org.uk, or log onto the CCEA website at www.ccea.org.uk/resultsday2022 to access the Frequently Asked Questions section.
