CLIVE Featherby has a need for speed.

The monster truck driver recently spent 13 days straight thrill-seeking on roller coasters in America.

He started out with one monster truck and at one point ended up with 12.

Now, Novocastrians will be taken on a hair-raising ride as Mr Featherby brings jaw-dropping stunts and high-flying action to the Newcastle Showground this weekend.

"It's all about getting as high as you can and getting big air," he said.

"We've got four of the best trucks in Australia that are going to be here.

"Unfortunately for poor old Thunda, we do tend to roll a bit."

The Monster Trucks Tour of Destruction show will see Outback Thunda, the 7.5 tonne, 1500 horsepower truck take centre stage as it smashes, bashes and clashes with anything in its path.

Outback Thunda is worth about $350,000 and Mr Featherby said it requires about 100 hours of maintenance a week.

The show includes a freestyle motor cross team, rollover cars and an explosive finale with colourful fireworks.

A flame-throwing jet van and jet Ute will chew through 600 litres of fuel each in just a couple of minutes as they spew 30 metres flames out the back.

Mr Featherby said Saturday's show is going to be a "really cool" afternoon.

"In the old days you used to drive over cars, now they want you to launch over big ramps," he said.

"It is really cool when you get there, the kids, it's a family show, it's fun to be a part of that.

"You'll hear it at the other end of Newcastle."

The Monster Truck Tour of Destruction is on at Newcastle Showground Saturday, September 7 from 4pm.

Tickets are available at eventbrite.com.au.
