A full list of all the road closures and roadworks across the North East this week

There are a number of road closure in place across the North East this week.

Some roads are closed fully, while others have lane closures. In some areas, temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may be in place.

For those planning travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Northumberland, Durham, North Tyneside or South Tyneside this week, take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be affected.

Newcastle

  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A186 Mosley Street at Dean Street until September 29.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on the A188 Benton Lane at West Farm Roundabout until June 23.
  • A189 closed in both directions due to roadworks during the night from Great Lime Road to A1056 Killingworth Way.
  • One lane closed due to roadworks on the A189 at A1056 Killingworth Way until April 7.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on B1600 Stoddart Street between Shieldfield Lane and Union Street until December 28.
  • Cut Bank closed in both directions due to roadworks between A186 City Road and Lime Street until May 12.
  • Saville Row closed due to roadworks from Northumberland Street to North Street until April 9.
  • Wychcroft Way closed in both directions due to roadworks between Sunnyway and Cambo Green until April 14.

Gateshead

  • Temporary traffic lights on Cushy Cow Lane, Ryton, from Hexham Old Road to Mullen Drive until 17:00 on July 3.
  • Temporary traffic lights on Hexham Old Road due to roadworks between Grange Drive and B6317 until 17:00 on July 3.
  • Rose Street closed in both directions due to roadworks between Morrison Street and Autumn Drive until May 3.
  • Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J56/A194M Birtley until May 31 2025.

Northumberland

  • A686 closed in both directions due to roadworks between Langley Castle Hotel and the A69 until April 10
  • Temporary traffic lights on the A697 in Longframlington at the B6344 until 17:00 on April 14.
  • B6305 closed in both directions at Hexham due to roadworks from B6531 to Merryleazes until April 16.
  • Green Lane in Ashington closed in both directions due to roadworks between Chillingham Crescent and A196 North Seaton Road until 6:00 on December 1.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Malvins Road near Kings Gardens, Blyth, until April 5.

County Durham

  • Wallnook Lane, Langley Park, closed in both directions due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace.

North Tyneside

  • Bell Street closed in both directions due to roadworks between Liddell Street and Union Quay until May 13 2024.
  • Temporary traffic lights on Grand Parade in Cullercoats due to electricity work at Beach Road until April 7.
  • Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street near Clive Street, North Shields, until May 13 2024.
  • Tyne Street, North Shields, closed in both directions due to roadworks from Norfolk Street to Linskill Street until May 15.

Sunderland

  • No through traffic in both directions on Burdon Lane, Ryhope, Sunderland, between Woodham Drive and Burdon turn-off due to roadworks.
  • No through traffic allowed on Redburn Row, Houghton-le-Spring, in both directions due to roadworks between Black Boy Road and B1284 until September 21.
