'A freak result' - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp makes admission over Manchester United win

Jurgen Klopp hailed the performance of his Liverpool team in their dismantling of Manchester United but admitted the 7-0 scoreline was a 'freak result'.

A tight game at Anfield was still goalless two minutes before half-time, but once Cody Gakpo had fired Liverpool ahead the hosts roared forward and United completely collapsed.

They conceded twice in the first five minutes of the second half and then folded to allow Liverpool to run riot in front of the Kop, but as happy as Klopp was with the performance, he said the scoreline was a one-off.

"A freak result, but a top performance," said Klopp. "The way we started the game was really special. The goal before half-time was sensational, what Robbo is doing there cutting inside and then really calm. We have to give ourselves time to get in the right position and then Cody realised in time, super finish.

"Second half couldn't start better. We force two goals and from that moment on we were flying."

United had arrived at Anfield 10 points ahead of Liverpool and confident of securing a first win here since 2016, but they left having taken a battering even more severe than the 4-0 loss here in April.

They've now lost three of their last four meetings with Liverpool 5-0, 4-0 and 7-0 but this result will sting given the troubles Klopp's side have had this season, although he thinks they are now behind them.

"We know we can play good football and better than we showed at times this season but there are reasons why we did not at times this season," he said.

"The main difference is we have now pretty much all the players available which is helpful. You saw the other night having Diogo is super helpful and now Bobby you saw the reception he got. Last line we have options again.

"We have the first time this season four or five players not in the squad who are training outstanding. Before that we had 9-10 players injured and that is not helpful. When you are not a good run. We started this season and never could get out of it. Really special night tonight but have to keep going."
