An out-of-control bushfire in Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been downgraded to “watch and act”.

According to NSW Rural Fire Service, a fire was reported on Meatworks Avenue in Oxford Falls and is moving east towards Cromer Heights in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

“If you are near Pinduro Pl, Jersey Pl, Maybrook Ave, Kirrang St, you are at risk,” a warning from NSW Rural Fire Service said at 2:39pm.

“Seek shelter now. It is too late to leave.”

According to 9News, more than 160 firefighters, 20 vehicles and 2 aircraft were dispatched to fight the blaze, which threatened homes and multiple retirement communities.

Paramedics arrived at the scene on standby but no injuries have been reported in the area so far.

The blaze was started as a hazard reduction burn, but grew out of control after jumping across containment lines in the early afternoon.

By about 4:30pm local time on Saturday, the situation was downgraded to “watch & act” after conditions eased in the area.

However, NSW Rural Fire Service is still warning residents to be aware of ember attack.

“Embers will be blown long distances ahead of the main fire front starting spot fires, these may impact your home earlier than the main fire front,” NSW Rural Fire Service warned at 3:30pm.

Plums of smoke have filled the Sydney skyline, visible from Manly Beach and even Sydney Airport.

A total fire ban was declared across Sydney on Thursday.
