While budget airlines can be a great way for some travelers to score a low ticket price, the biggest drawback is that, due to cost-cutting measures and limited airport slots, such airlines do not always fly into the airport closest to certain major cities.
Emerging carrier Avelo flies into Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) rather than LAX while Frontier Airlines (FRON) previously flew only into New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Newark Liberty (EWR) and Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP).

This week, the latter Denver-based carrier announced that it would now also add JFK to the list of airports it flies into. The 11 new routes that Frontier will start running in October and November include daily service to JFK from Tampa and Orlando launching on Oct. 27.

Other new routes include flights to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) from Austin, Newark and Washington’s Dulles Airport and a new weekly route between Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ).

“As consumers look ahead to the fall and winter months and make their holiday plans, we are thrilled to once again expand our roster of convenient and affordable travel options,” Frontier’s Vice President of Network and Operations Josh Flyr said in a statement.
Frontier is also restarting service from Burbank that it cut in 2023 with new routes to BUR from Phoenix, San Francisco and Denver. The latter will launch on Nov. 22 and run three times a week.

The other new flights announced by Frontier include a route between Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and Seattle’s SeaTac Airport (SEA) launching on Oct. 11 and a flight to Washington Dulles (IAD) and Orlando International Airport (MCO) running four times a week as of Nov. 14.
To promote the new routes, Frontier is launching a new fare sale in which those who commit to booking one of the new flights before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time of Sept. 2 can score it for promotional fares of as low as $19 in each direction (such rates are only available for certain days in the week and do not include any baggage, seat selection or taxes and airport fees.)
Flights also need to be scheduled for between Oct. 11, 2024 and Feb. 28, 2025 with significant blackout periods for dates around Thanksgiving, Christmas and other popular holiday travel days: Nov. 11-12, 26-27 and 30 as well as Dec. 1-2, 19-22, 26-29 and Jan. 2-5 and Feb. 13-17 in 2025.
Contrary to some of Frontier’s past fare-slasher sales, one is not required to buy a round-trip ticket to take advantage of the sale and could theoretically score a $19-plus ticket for one of the new flights.
“From warm weather destinations such as Southern California, Texas, and Florida or winter sports meccas Utah and Colorado, to popular metropolitan areas like New York, Atlanta and Washington, D.C., there are now even more exciting destinations to choose from when flying Frontier,” Flyer said further of the airline’s schedule changes.
