A 5G mast, a rail station extension, changes to supermarket times - the planning applications in Cardiff this week

A number of developments have been proposed to and handled by Cardiff Council recently. Among them is a decision on a proposed 5G mast, plans for a railway extension and a proposal to turn an art gallery into short-stay holiday accommodation.

Here are some of the stand out applications that were received and decided on this week:

Fairwater

Prior approval has been granted for an extension to the platform at Fairwater Station. The extension of the usable platform at the train station to a length of 84 metres is intended to accommodate the Core Valley Line (CVL) trains that will be part of the South Wales Metro.

Work on the CVLs which will provide lines to Aberdare, Coryton, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhymney, Treherbert will be ongoing until 2023.

St Fagans

Cardiff Council has determined that proposals for a new 5G mast in St Fagans will require prior approval as the appearance of the development may have a "significant impact" on the surrounding area.

A recommendation that the prior approval be refused states it "cannot be concluded that the proposal would not have a harmful impact on the visual amenity and character of the area".

Ely

A major supermarket brand has placed an application to vary a condition on planning permission for one of its Cardiff stores. Aldi Stores Ltd has applied to reduce restrictions on deliveries to its store on Treseder Way and allow them to be received between 7am and 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

The current condition on a past application to vary delivery hours at the store restricts 9am and 5pm on Sundays. Deliveries from Mondays to Saturdays take place between 7am and 10pm.

Grangetown

Planning permission has been granted for a change of use application to turn a building currently occupied by a second-hand furniture shop into an eatery. The premises, located on Penarth Road in Grangetown, is currently occupied by PMD Second Hand Furniture.

If approved, it would be open between the hours of noon and 11pm once developed.

Cathays

Proposals for an art gallery and offices to be turned into high-quality short-stay holiday accommodation has been refused. Change of use plans for the premises, located on Museum Place and close to Cardiff Civic Centre, had been opposed by local councillor Sarah Merry.

Her consultation response to Development Management at Cardiff Council states: "Previously the planning inspector has ruled that the retention of small office space is important for the retention of the character of the conservation area – this was part of the appeal decision on a property in Park Place. We need to reflect on this rather than allow piecemeal changes of use."

Grangetown

An application to extend an Aldi store in Cardiff has been granted. The extension of the foodstore at Cardiff Bay Retail Park will include external alterations to the building, a new external lobby and "minor alterations to access and parking".

The retail floor area will increase from 1,006sq m to 1,332sq m. The development will also include alterations to the store's service yard to allow improved access for HGV deliveries. Want the latest news from Cardiff straight to your inbox? Sign up for free here.
