99mph Storm Isha rail chaos & flood health impact - The Standard podcast

The clean-up continues from Storm Isha after gusts of up to 99mph battered parts of the United Kingdom.

While London dodged the worst of the winds and rain, the capital’s commuters faced the knock-on impact of travel disruption on TfL services from debris blocking tracks.

Many mainline routes into London also suffered delays, including Southeastern services into Charing Cross.

Avanti West Coast, which runs into London Euston, cut trains on Sunday tea time as the winds whipped up to leave travellers stranded.

Parts of the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland experienced their strongest gusts in two decades.

In Grangemouth, Fife, an 84-year-old car passenger died after the vehicle was hit by a falling tree.

Tens of thousands of homes have also been left without electricity.

Air traffic control restrictions on Sunday night led to flight cancellations and caused many planes to divert.

Another storm is due to hit the UK tomorrow, this time named as Storm Jocelyn.

Then, after the winds, often come floods caused by rains deluging saturated post-storm ground to cause standing groundwater.

To discover more about the aftermath of Storm Isha, why the government must act on flood defences and the health impact of living in saturated homes, The Standard podcast’s joined by Sanjay Johal, community engagement manager at the National Flood Forum support charity.
