911 star Lee Brennan says childhood cancer left him infertile

911 star Lee Brennan has shared how dealing with cancer as a child left him infertile.

The singer, 51, was speaking on This Morning about being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma twice during his childhood, in order to raise awareness about the illness and its symptoms.

He was first diagnosed at eight years old, and the illness meant he had to use a wheelchair and weighed as low as two and half stone.

Brennan then had the disease five years later, and had to have another round of chemotherapy.

Speaking about his second diagnosis, he told hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard: “It was really tough, and I blocked the world out.

"I didn’t really go out and stuff like that – I was isolated, either in hospital or at home. I stopped going out because I lost my hair, hated the way I looked, I was skin and bone.”

Thankfully, Brennan got the all-clear, but he says the cancer left him with long-term side effects.

"I am all clear now. There’s a few things that have happened along the way, but I’m happy and living life. It’s taught me things," he added.

“The main repercussion for me was finding out I couldn’t have children, and that was a huge blow. It’s something I’ve come to terms with over the years, and I’m alive - that’s the important thing."

The NHS says that: “Hodgkin lymphoma is an uncommon cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels and glands spread throughout your body.”

They add that it “can develop at any age, but it mostly affects people between 20 and 40 years of age and those over 75” and “around 2,100 people are diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in the UK each year”.

“The most common symptom of Hodgkin lymphoma is a painless swelling in a lymph node, usually in the neck, armpit or groin,” it adds.

Formed in Glasgow in 1995, 911 shot to fame in the nineties, and the band were recently featured in documentary about the scene Boybands Forever.

Brennan was the lead vocalist, alongside Jimmy Constable and Simon "Spike" Dawbarn.

The band split in 1999, following ten UK top 10 singles.

But they reunited in 2012 for reality-documentary series The Big Reunion, where other acts like Atomic Kitten, Liberty X, B*Witched, Five and Honeyz reformed.
