91 schools now have confirmed coronavirus cases across Greater Manchester - thousands of pupils are self-isolating

The number of schools to confirm Covid cases across Greater Manchester has now reached 91.

Little over a week after most pupils returned from the summer holidays and thousands have been told to self-isolate amid positive cases.

On Friday we reported how the number of schools with confirmed cases had risen to more than 65.

Since then almost two dozen more have closed to certain classes and year groups.

While some high schools are sending home entire year groups of around 200 pupils, others say they are now restricting the self-isolations to close contacts of the confirmed cases - using seating plans to help identify those individuals they feel are at risk.

Salford City Academy in Eccles has sent home a number of Year 7 pupils after a positive case there. It already had a number of Year 11 pupils self-isolating.

While Saddleworth School in Oldham (Year 9), Crompton House CE School in Oldham (Year 13), St James's CE High in Bolton (Year 7) and Unsworth Academy in Bury (Year 7) are among those to send entire year groups home.

The closures confirmed today brings the region's total to 91.

And it's an ever changing picture at many of the schools as more cases come to light.

At St Mary's Catholic High School in Astley, Wigan, initially a small number of pupils were asked to self-isolate. But from today, September 14, the whole of Year 11 has been asked to stay home 'due to confirmed cases'.

A letter to parents states: "We are incredibly frustrated to be writing this letter so soon after the start of the new school year but following a lengthy consultation with Public Health England and the local authority it has been decided that in order to prevent transmission of the virus, we need to close school for Year 11 until Wednesday, September 23."

And it's not just high schools with large numbers self-isolating.

At Spindle Point Primary in Kearsley, Bolton, only Year 4 children remain in school, with seven year groups, including a nursery, all now having to self-isolate. It's one of 20 schools where cases have been confirmed today.
