90s soap heartthrobs then and now - from Adam Rickitt to Gary Lucy and Jack Ryder

With the likes of 90s soap heartthrob Will Mellor making an impact in Coronation Street as the nasty gangster Harvey, when better to look back on some other classic soap heartthrobs.

They're part and parcel of soap opera history and it can't be denied that whether they're a bad boy or a sensitive soul, they will always bring the drama as well as admirers at home.

Whether it's the likes of troubled Jamie Mitchell (Jack Ryder) on EastEnders or Hollyoaks bad boy Sol Patirck (Paul Danan), there are a number of 90s favourites.

So, what happened to these beloved faces and have they stayed in soapland or moved on to newer pastures?

With some help from the Manchester Evening News, we at The Mirror a look back at some old soap favourites.

Gary Lucy

Following appearances on Grange Hill and Sky One football drama Dream Team, Gary Lucy became a true soap heartthrob when he was cast as Luke Morgan in Hollyoaks in 1999.

He received critical acclaim for his performance in a ground-breaking male rape storyline for the Channel 4 soap opera, even winning Best Newcomer at the British soap awards in 2000.

Gary left Hollyoaks in 2000 but returned for a guest appearance in 2002.

After his exit from the soap, Gary went on to star as Kyle Pascoe in raunchy ITV drama Footballers' Wives from 2002 to 2005.

His next big role was as PC Will Fletcher in ITV police drama The Bill, staying in the show for five years until his exit in 2010.

Gary made a soap comeback in 2012 well he was cast as the slippery charmer Danny Pennant in EastEnders, staying with the BBC One soap until his character departed in disgrace in 2014.

In 2014 he began his on-off stage role as Gaz in the stage production of The Full Monty - which saw him flash the flesh for his fans on the stage.

Thankfully for Hollyoaks fans, Gary returned to the soap as Luke Morgan in 2017 and despite some break for his stage roles, he has remained with the soap opera since.

From 2014 to 2018, Gary was married to Natasha Gray and they share four children together.

Jack Ryder

Walford's answer to Leo DiCaprio, Jack Ryder made his debut in EastEnders as Phil Mitchell's godson Jamie Mitchell in 1998.

He swiftly became one of the BBC One soap opera's most central and beloved characters, often becoming entangled in Phil's feuds, dealing with being abused by his uncle Billy Mitchell, and also his bumpy star-crossed romance with Sonia Fowler.

Ryder quit the soap in 2002 and was killed-off when his old best friend Martin Fowler ran him down in his car, later dying in hospital and breaking fans and Sonia's heart.

That same year, Jack also married Hear'Say singer turned actress Kym Marsh but they divorced in 2009.

Since leaving the soap, Jack went on to become focused on theatre performances and directing, with roles in The Calendar Girls, The Girls, and also directed the touring production of The Full Monty (starring Gary Lucy!).

He also had roles in the radio soap The Archers and appeared in a recurring role on Holby City from 2012 to 2019.

Last year, Jack revealed that he was expecting his first child with partner Ella.

Paul Danan

Appearing on Hollyoaks from 1997 to 2001, Paul Danan starred as resident bad boy Sol Patirck.

His storylines saw him clash with step-father Jack Osborne and his new step-siblings Ruth and Darren Osborne after his mum Jill married into the Osborne clan.

Jill's deal later sent Sol over the edge, prompting some criminal behaviour from Sol that saw him become homeless and eventually flee the village.

After the soap, Paul appeared in two series of the ITV reality dating show Celebrity Love Island from 2005 to 2006 and became one of the show's most memorable contestants.

The star appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2019 and spoke about his substance abuse and revealed that he had been in rehab 17 times.

Now living in Hertfordshire, Paul runs a local drama club for children and has a son named Deniro.

Adam Rickitt

Making his debut in Coronation Street in 1997, Adam Rickitt took on the role of troubled teen Nick Tilsley, the eldest child of series favourite Gail Platt.

His storylines primarily focused on his romance with Leanne Batersby until Adam quit the soap in 1999 to launch his pop career.

After this didn't pan out and he lost his record deal, Adam made a return appearance as Nick in 2002 before a longer stint from 2003 to 2004 - which saw him involved in the soap's first on-screen gay kiss when he locked lips with his sisters boyfriend Todd Grimshaw.

After leaving Coronation Street, Adam took part in reality series The Game, had an unsuccessful attempt at a political career in the Conservative Party, and later joined New Zealand soap Shorthand Street in 2007 as Kieran Mitchell.

Due to this commitment, the role of Nick was later recast to actor Ben Price on Coronation Street.

Leaving Shorthand Street in 2010, Adam later went on to join Hollyoaks in as Kyle Kelly in 2017.

After a number of romantic entanglements with the likes of Nancy Osborne and Harry Thompson, Adam left the soap in 2020 when Kyle took his own life at the end of a depression storyline.

Adam has been married to Good Morning Britain news correspondent Katy Fawcett since 2014.

Paul Nicholls

Paul Nicholls rose to stardom in 1996 when he joined EastEnders in the role of troubled heartthrob Joe Wicks, son of troublemaker David Wicks.

He achieved full heartthrob status with viewers and was involved in various romances on the show.

Joe was at the centre of a powerful schizophrenia plotline after the death of his sister Karen. He departed Albert Square with mother Lorraine in 1997 and has not returned since.

After Enders, Paul took on further stage and TV roles including City Central (1998-1999), Harley Street, Law & Order: UK (2012-2013), Holby City, and Ackley Bridge.

From 2008 to 2015, Paul was married to Chantal Brown.

Paul almost died in 2017 after pending three days trapped in a Thai rock pool with a smashed leg.

"I thought the only way I can go is down but I didn't realise how much I was bleeding. As soon as I touched the rock, I just went over. It was a 20ft drop and my knee hit something on the way down," he told Loose Women.

"It looked like something just flew out of my knee - part of my knee cap - and then I hit the water. Where my knee cap should have been, there was just a hole and I was holding it."

Paul recently wowed us with his youthful looks back in December last year when he was seen out and about with a female friend pushing a buggy.

Jeremy Edwards

Rising to fame in 1995, Jeremy was beloved for his role as Kurt Benson in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks and was one of the show's original core characters.

His biggest storylines saw him have a romance with Ruth Osborne (Terri Dwyer) and a feud with Rob Hawthorne before being killed-off in a ski accident in 1999.

After Hollyoaks, he joined Holby City as healthcare assistant Danny Shaughnessy from 1999 to 2003.

During this time he began a high-profile romance with S Club 7 star Rachel Stevens in 2002, but the pair split in 2003.

Jeremy revealed that the bad impact on their relationship after a his mental health downturn following the death of his Holby co-star Laura Sadler. The actress had fallen from a balcony to her death at the age of 22.

He told Heat: "It was a tough time for me. After Laura's death I got really messed up. I was drinking a hell of a lot and got seriously depressed."

After leaving Holby, Jeremy finished fourth in the 2005 series of Celebrity Big Brother.

Jeremy later married Lydia Metz in 2009 and have a three-year-old daughter Scarlett.

They revealed in December they were expecting a second child after IVF treatment.

In 2019, Jeremy took part in The X Factor : Celebrity alongside former Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole.

To the shock of Hollyoaks fans, Jeremy returned as Kurt for the show's 25th anniversary in October last year, with it being revealed that Kurt had faked his own death.

He departed the soap again in December, with Jeremy revealing that he would not be back on Twitter.

Jeremy tweeted in January: "It is with a heavy heart I am announcing I will NOT be returning to #Hollyoaks Many reasons but I’d be lying if I said being judged on here hasn't influenced my decision. Never say never but for now I’m done. Thank you to those who have supported me for me."

We hope we see him again as Kurt soon!
