Alright Sydney, brace yourselves because nine of the beaches along the Northern Beaches have been forced to shut their sandy gates thanks to some weird tiny balls that decided to wash up uninvited.
Manly, Dee Why, Long Reef, Queenscliff, Freshwater, North and South Curl Curl, North Steyne, and North Narrabeen are all off-limits for now.
These marble-sized white and grey spheres appeared on Tuesday, causing confusion with the local council. The Northern Beaches Council and Environment Protection Agency are aware of the situation and are currently collecting samples to test.
“So far, most samples identified are marble-sized with a few larger in size,” Northern Beaches Council said in a statement, per 9News.
“At the moment, both the EPA and the council are doing testing on the samples, but yes, at the moment, we don’t know what they actually are,” Mayor of Northern Beaches Council Sue Heins said on ABC’s Radio Sydney.
The balls will be removed safely from all of the beaches.
If this feels like déjà vu, you’re not wrong. Back in October, we had a similar situation with black balls turning up on Coogee Beach. It seemed to spread as more debris was found at Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, Congong, Frenchmans, Gordons Bay Little Bay, Malabar, Pooles, Silver, Tamarama and 1080 beaches, in the months that followed.
Those turned out to be a lovely cocktail of diesel and sewage. Yum.
So, unless you fancy a game of “dodge the potentially toxic mystery sphere”, it might be time to embrace your inner homebody or find a nice, ball-free pool.
