85-year-old Co Down woman walking 5K a day to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees

An 85-year-old woman from Co Down who was heartbroken to see the impact of the "terrible war" in Ukraine is walking five kilometres a day to raise funds to support refugees.

Naomi Bustard started her fundraising efforts 10 days ago and has since raised £1,700 for the Habitat for Humanity's Ukrainian refugee appeal which is supporting those fleeing the war torn country.

Speaking to Belfast Live, she said that she had seen the images on television of families fleeing the conflict and wanted to do whatever she can in order to provide shelter and support for them.

She is walking 5K a day around Hillsborough until Easter Monday when she turns 86.

Naomi said: "I have seen on the news the impact that the terrible war in Ukraine has had on the people of the country who have been forced to flee their homes for their own safety.

"I felt that I had to try and do something that could support them and Habitat for Humanity is an organisation that can be trusted to provide proper shelter and support for refugees at their bases in Poland and other neighbouring countries.

"Throughout lent I am going to be walking 5K everyday around Hillsborough Castle as a way of raising funds and I have been speaking to everyone that I pass in order to encourage them to donate. So far not one person has declined to contribute, which has been brilliant, and I have raised over £1,700 and hope to raise much more.

"Some of the money has already been used to provide heaters for those who are in refugee camps and it is good to know that it is already being used to help."

Naomi has also encouraged others to get involved in the appeal.

She continued: "It is not difficult to get out there and do something to support the refugees from Ukraine and I hope that even more people will be able to help the campaign and help the vulnerable people and families fleeing the country."

Since the war in Ukraine began, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that more than 4 million people have fled from the country.

As an organisation that builds homes, communities and hope, Habitat for Humanity has joined the global effort in calling for an end to the violence that threatens all three.

Habitat for Humanity National Offices in Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia are supporting refugees fleeing Ukraine to find safety and shelter. This includes immediate emergency support in border camps and the longer term shelter needs in host communities.
