800 Wetherspoon pubs to stay open late for King's coronation

Wetherspoon pubs will be staying open for longer after King Charles' coronation. The pub chain will be keeping all of its 844 pubs open an extra hour in celebration of the monarch's coronation.

It means that drinkers will be able to stay in some pubs until 1am on Sunday, May 7. Boozers are expected to be busy due to the coronation as a bank holiday weekend has been declared from Friday, May 5 to Sunday, May 7.

However, not all pubs will be open until the maximum of 1am. Wetherspoon advises you check your local boozers opening hours by visiting its website.

The company's decision to stay open late comes after Home Secretary Suella Braverman extended licensing hours for pubs and bars over the coronation weekend, reports The Mirror.

On announcing the extended hours last month Braverman said: "His Majesty The King’s Coronation will be a momentous occasion deserving of special celebration. That is why I am extending the licensing hours over this historic Coronation weekend. Up and down the country, people can enjoy an extra pint or two in the evening while families and friends can come together to wish His Majesty The King a long and happy reign.”

The decision by the Home Secretary means that all pubs will be allowed to serve alcohol until 1am. That is two hours later than the usual closing time of 11pm.

Wetherspoon is not the only pub chain keeping its venues open longer over the weekend. Greene King and Fullers have said that some of their pubs will remain open longer during the celebrations.
