80 tonnes of illegally dumped rubbish has been recovered from Finglas with people warned not to fall for bogus collectors.
The waste removal operation was organised by Fingal County Council with help from An Garda Siochana. The illegally dumped household and bulky waste was moved from Dunsink Lane to a permitted waste facility.
Locals are being warned to be wary of illegal waste collectors who often offer cheap services on Facebook. The waste ends up being dumped illegally by these scammers.
Many of the “Man in a Van” individuals don’t have a waste collection permit and are not authorised to collect waste. Fingal County Council are urging people to ask for ID and ask to see a Waste Collection Permit.
A list of registered waste collectors can be found here. There are now going to be increased patrols and checkpoints by waste enforcement officers and local gardai to prevent further dumping.
CCTV will also be used to catch the people dumping rubbish in the area.
A spokeswoman for Fingal County Council said: "Following the recent signing into law of the Circular Economy Act 2022, CCTV will also be utilised once the new Code of Practice has been issued to allow these technologies to be used for waste enforcement purposes.
"Evidence of illegal waste activities will be gathered and those responsible prosecuted in the District Court under the Waste Management Act 1996. If found guilty an individual can be fined up to €5,000 or face 12 months imprisonment as well as receiving a criminal conviction.
"Household and bulky waste is still a valuable resource if it is segregated and disposed of correctly. However, illegally dumped waste costs Local Authorities hundreds of thousands of euros each year, money which could be better spent on improving local services within the community.
"To report unauthorised waste collectors or dumping contact: environment@fingal.ie or ring 01 8906799."
