74 candidates for 2022 Dumfries and Galloway Council elections

The starting gun has been fired for May’s council elections.

A total of 74 candidates had put themselves forward by Wednesday afternoon’s deadline.

They’ll be fighting it out for 43 seats across 12 wards.

The Conservatives are fielding 24 candidates, with at least two people standing in 11 of the 12 wards. There are 14 Labour candidates, with at least one in each ward, and one SNP candidate in each of the 12 wards.

There are also 10 Green candidates, six independents, five Lib Dems, one Alba and two with no political allegiance.

The latter two are Tommy Sloan and Willie Scobie, who currently serve Stranraer and the Rhins as part of the Dumfries and Galloway Socialist Group.

A number of current councillors are not seeking re-election, including council leader Elaine Murray, her husband Jeff Leaver, depute leader Rob Davidson, former council leader Ronnie Nicholson, young people’s champion Adam Wilson and independent leader Jane Maitland.

Others who are standing down are John Charteris (Lochar), David James (Castle Douglas and Crocketford), John Martin (Nith), Henry McClelland (Annandale South), Jim McColm (Mid Galloway and Wigtown West), David McKie (Morth West Dumfries), Matthew Ronnie (Mid and Upper Nithsdale) and Ros Surtees (Stranraer and the Rhins).
