70 litter picks taking place in Manchester to celebrate the Queen’s 70 years of service

Litter picks are taking place around Manchester to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years of service. Keep Manchester Tidy, the partnership between Manchester City Council and Keep Britain Tidy, will take to the streets with local groups by hosting 70 litter picks in a project called The Platinum Picks.

After hundreds of volunteers got involved in the Great British Spring Clean, and following calls for more litter picking events, Keep Manchester Tidy are embarking on the challenge to complete 70 litter picks in the Queen’s jubilee year. The Platinum Picks program will launch at Queen’s Park, Harpurhey, at 11am on Saturday 21 May.

The Lord Mayor Elect Councillor Donna Ludford and her Consort Councillor Sean McHale will be stopping by at 1pm to help everyone celebrate the start of the Platinum Picks in style. Keep Manchester Tidy and The Council encourage everyone to come down as there will be lots of fun activities, and even rides for young ones - as well as lots of litter picking!

Residents of all ages are welcome to get involved in the Platinum Picks that will be running throughout the year. To ensure residents are kept in the loop, the events will additionally be listed on the Manchester City Council website.

The Council are also offering eager litter pickers the chance to rally their friends together and host their own litter picks as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

In tandem with this, Keep Manchester Tidy will also host Platinum Picks for schools, community groups and local businesses- encouraging residents of all ages to get involved with litter picking in their local area.

The year 2022 is Manchester City Council’s 'Our Year', full of opportunities dedicated to Manchester's children and young people to make up for all the time they lost over lockdown. As part of Our Year, the 70 Platinum Picks will focus on the city's parks and play areas- ensuring that young people have clean areas to play and socialise.

To ensure Keep Manchester Tidy are making a positive impact and targeting the right areas, children and young people can email Keep Manchester Tidy to suggest areas that they would like to see cleaned up.

Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Neighbourhoods said: “I think that the Platinum Picks are a great opportunity to work together, to celebrate the Jubilee, and tidy our parks and public spaces for everyone to enjoy. I especially like the idea that our city's young people can suggest areas that need to be cleaned.

"It will engage young people who care about our planet and ensure that we’re having a positive impact in the areas that matter.”

Residents can request support, equipment, and the collection of picked litter bags by e-mailing keepmanchestertidy@manchester.gov.uk .
