1. DO NOT SKIP GETTING STORAGE PRODUCTS
I mean it. You don’t realise how much stuff you have until you’re throwing it all in the closet. So many people will want to see your new place — and you won’t have a lot of time to hide it all. Think of storage and organisation as the best hack to a clean(ish) place.
The good news is that you can get good quality Kmart storage products for low prices — so you can spend the rest on that move-in present you’ve been eyeing off. You deserve it.

Kmart has everything you need to keep your place tidy and minimise roommate arguments. For starters, think of the kitchen because your drawers don’t magically come with those divider thingies for cutlery — plus you need to do something with all those takeaway containers.
Next, you’ll need to hit the bathroom so your towels don’t get mouldy on the floor. Even worse, your makeup might fall into the toilet. Don’t be like me, get a makeup drawer insert.

Moving on to the entryway, because yes, people do judge you when they first step into your place. So, if you want to impress a certain someone, please put your shoes away. Otherwise, I will throw them at you like when we were kids.
Finally, you’ll need storage for your desk, so your study doesn’t suck up all the junk like a black hole. A cable rack will be your new best friend, and a pen holder will stop you from thinking someone ‘stole’ them.

2. A toilet brush
You may laugh, but a toilet brush is literally a roommate-saver if you’re sharing a bathroom. No one wants to see your leftovers, and unless you’re going to scrub the toilet bowl with your bare hands — it’s essential to get first thing.
Also, I don’t want to see you using the previous tenant’s toilet brush, that’s nasty. You don’t know (and don’t want to) know where that’s been. My biggest tip is not to get a white one. Otherwise, you’re going to know everything about your roommate’s dietary habits pretty quick.

3. Actual cleaning supplies
“Eh, I can use body wash to clean,” I hear you brushing me off. Turns out, no, it doesn’t do the same thing. Trust me, you’ll need stronger chemicals after a night of partying. You’re going to need bathroom, mirror, toilet, floor and kitchen cleaner to start off, including washers and scrubbers (which are very different things before you ask me.)
Oh, and hand soap and dishwashing detergent so you can get rid of those pesky germs.

4. Backup food
You know that food cupboard your mum told you not to touch? Yeah, it turns out that was for a reason. Whether you’re sick, have come home late, or just don’t feel like ducking to the shops — your backup food will be a lifesaver.
Think of easy things you can store, like soups, noodles, tuna, rice, and canned veggies. You get the picture. Future you will be so thankful, just save me some tinned fruit, please.

5. Candles and matches
There’s nothing quite like realising you’re in a blackout and your electronics are dead. Especially if someone was knocking on the door, which, thankfully, was my lovely next-door neighbour checking if I was okay. Luckily, she had candles and matches for me, but yes, get yourselves some, so you’re prepared.
It also creates really cool ambience if you’re having friends over — even a special someone. Ooh la la.

6. A first aid kit
If you think you’re unstoppable, you’ll still need a first aid kit for when people come over. I’m not just talking about bandage wraps and bandaids, you’ll also need medication in your kit. You can’t just borrow a pain med from your mum’s stash after a headache, you’ll need your own now.
On that note, check out where the closest hospital is to you — as you don’t want to be looking it up if the time comes.

7. A can opener
It turns out a lot of things need a can opener, and it’s going to drive you mad trying to open it. Especially if the shops have already closed and you have to attack it with a knife — not that I’ve tried before, definitely not, that would be silly.
Your parents should have a spare one, just double-check that it works before you take it. We all have a favourite can opener, and you don’t want to get the dodgy one.
