7 killed in Kansas City metro in past 3 days, including 4 in KCK. Here's what we know

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Seven people were killed in the past week across the Kansas City region, including four people killed in Kansas City, Kansas. All were shot between Thursday and Sunday.

So far this year, the metro has suffered 84 homicides, including 51 in Kansas City, and 15 in Kansas City, Kansas, according to data tracked by The Star.

On Sunday, following two shootings that left three people dead and three others wounded overnight Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas, Mayor Tyrone Garner urged the community to stop the violence.

"We have to move beyond being reactive with sending thoughts and prayers," Mayor Garner wrote on Facebook Sunday. "Let's be proactive in stopping violence, by learning to deescalate, incorporating conflict resolution, respecting and valuing each other, but most of all, loving one another."

Homicides have generally risen over the past 20 years as community leaders grapple with solutions. Since 2000, Kansas City has recorded only five years that did not exceed 100 lives lost.

Here is a timeline of the violence over the past week across the metro area.

Kansas City police were called at about 4 p.m. Thursday to a shooting reported at the Express Stop convenience store in the 3500 block of Independence Avenue. Officers found two gunshot victims, both men, outside the store. One of the victims, who has not yet been publicly identified, was declared dead at the scene. The other was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

That same day, a man who had been shot a week earlier in a front yard in the 9100 block of Wayne Avenue, died as the result of his gunshot wounds. The victim, David L. Bynum, was 40 years old.

On Friday, Kansas City police were called to a shooting at Ivanhoe Park, near the intersection of East 43rd Street and Park Avenue. A man who was found unresponsive near the park's shelter house was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.

Also on Friday, across the state line, Kansas City, Kansas, police responded to a shooting just after 1:30 p.m. at a home near North 10th Street and Everett Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a man who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The following evening, on Saturday, Kansas City, Kansas, police were called about 7:30 p.m. to a triple shooting inside a home in the 1800 block of North 26th Street. Two people were declared dead at the scene. A third victim, who was wounded, was taken to a hospital.

A few hours later, early Sunday morning, KCK police responded to a shooting in the 200 block of North 6th Street. One person was found fatally wounded. Two other victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
