Summer is right around the corner, so we’ve been looking to all the overseas runways to figure out what trends we’re going to see everywhere now that things are heating up. So far, we’ve unpacked everything from summer dresses and sandals to sunglasses, now it’s time to find you the handbag(s) that’ll get you through the season.
To make sure we’re on top of the latest trends, we caught up with Vestirsi’s Founder and Creative Director, Monica Upton, to unpack the runway trends that are finally trickling down to Australia. According to Monica, there are seven key trends to look out for this spring/summer.
Here’s everything you need to know and where to shop each trend.
The 7 Handbag Trends For Summer 2024
Metallic Bags
According to Monica, luxury houses like Dior and Balenciaga kicked off the metallic bag trend during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, setting the stage for spring/summer 2025. “These futuristic bags, often made with high-shine materials like mirror-like silver and holographic finishes, quickly became a hit across high fashion,” she told PEDESTRIAN.TV.
They’re a fun way to elevate a simple denim or linen look or add a finishing touch to any wedding guest outfit.
Woven Handbags
We first spotted woven handbags on the Loewe, Hodakova and Altuzarra runways, which showed handwoven and macramé during Milan and New York Fashion weeks, respectively.
“These artisanal bags are perfect for the warmer months, as they embody an earthy and natural vibe, appealing to the bohemian and beach-bound markets,” says Monica.
We’d pair these with beach outfits, soft, airy linens, and sun dresses.
Neon and Bold Colours
Versace and Valentino brought vibrant neon and bold-coloured handbags to the forefront during Milan and Paris Fashion Week. “Their use of electric hues like hot pink, lime green, and cobalt blue immediately set the tone for a bright and daring Spring/Summer 2025 season.”
This trend is perfect for adding that pop of colour to any outfit.
Hobo Bags
Hobo bags, known for their relaxed, crescent-shaped silhouette, made a strong comeback during Celine’s and Coach’s Spring/Summer 2025 collections, explains Monica. With their slouchy, spacious design, hobo bags are both fashionable and functional, making them ideal for everyday wear.
“Hobo bags are experiencing a revival, appealing to both high-fashion lovers and those looking for practical, stylish accessories. This silhouette appeals to customers seeking a balance between comfort and style,” says Monica.
Suede Bags
Suede bags have cycled through fashion for decades and are well known for their soft, textured appearance. Their 2025 revival started at Paris Fashion Week, according to Monica, with designers like Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant embracing this classic material for Spring/Summer.
“Suede’s versatility as both a luxurious and casual material makes it a key trend across both high fashion and mainstream retail for the upcoming season,” says Monica.
Dark Chocolate Colour Trend
Monica says to keep an eye out for dark brown, particularly rich chocolate brown handbags, as a continuation of the chocolate brown trend we’ve seen pop up in recent years.
“Rich dark chocolate brown bags emerged as a key colour trend during Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks, with designers like Hermès and Prada showcasing this warm, luxurious shade. The deep, earthy tone offers a sophisticated alternative to traditional black bags, providing a sense of understated elegance.”
This trend taps into the growing demand for timeless, versatile hues that are both classic and modern.
Convertible Handbags
A trend we didn’t see coming: convertible bags. “These multifunctional bags, which can easily transform between different styles (e.g., from a backpack to a crossbody or tote) cater to consumers’ increasing demand for versatility and practicality without sacrificing style,” explains Monica.
Chloé introduced convertible bags in their Spring/Summer 2025 collection at Paris Fashion Week, focusing on functional luxury. According to Monica, their designs feature soft leather bags that can transition from a backpack to a crossbody with ease, which is ideal for modern, on-the-go lifestyles. Chloé’s signature laid-back yet elegant aesthetic is maintained, with the bags featuring adjustable straps, multiple carrying options, and neutral tones, making them highly adaptable for various occasions.
“Another early adopter of the convertible bag trend is Stella McCartney, who is renowned for her sustainable, ethical fashion. Her Spring/Summer 2025 collection showcased eco-friendly convertible bags made from vegan leather. These bags could be worn as a shoulder bag, crossbody, or backpack, providing sustainable luxury with the added functionality bonus,” says Monica.
Monica’s brand, Vestirsi, is also an early adopter of this trend with the Bella Convertible Backpack. Thanks to its versatility and convenience, it’s been one of the brand’s best-selling bags four seasons in a row.
The only question remains: which bag are you picking up for summer?
