7,144 new Scots Covid cases as councils' infection rates listed by Public Health Scotland

Scotland has confirmed another 7,144 Covid cases while the number of patients being treated with the illness in intensive care is almost in single figures.

Data has been published by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland (PHS) this afternoon as part of the national Covid-19 daily briefing.

Nationally, there are 944 patients with the disease being treated in hospital which is a rise of 32 from yesterday's reported figure. There are currently 11 people being treated in ICUs.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran is up 385. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 91,171 positive tests in the region and 1,326,382 million across Scotland.

Of the new cases reported, 152 were in East Ayrshire, 140 attributed to North Ayrshire and 102 in South Ayrshire.

As a result of the historical update in terms of Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, the Shetland Islands has the highest rate in the country – at 2,374.3 as of Wednesday, February 16.

The Orkney Islands has the second-highest infection rate at 1,357.1 while Dundee City is third with 977.7.

In terms of Ayrshire's thee local authorities, East Ayrshire has the highest rate of 629.9; South Ayrshire's rate stands at 595.7 while North Ayrshire's is 570.6.

A total of 18 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 793.0.

A further 22 deaths mean 10,566 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 13,157 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, February 13 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 160,038 as of last night and 181,424 with Covid mentioned on the death certificate.

There are 72 patients with the disease being treated in Ayrshire hospitals, up one on yesterday, and fewer than five people in ICUs.

Nationally, a total of 4,429,979 people have received one dose of a Covid vaccine; 4,146,918 are double jabbed and 3,371,691 people have received a third dose/booster.
