Early Saturday morning, Arizona State University Police took action against 69 individuals for trespassing following the establishment of an 'unauthorized encampment' on campus. The university released a statement detailing the events that transpired.
The group responsible for the encampment, described as mostly non-ASU affiliates, maintained their demonstration until 11 p.m. local time on Friday. Despite repeated instructions to disperse, a portion of the group refused to comply, leading to their subsequent arrest and charges of criminal trespass.
ASU clarified its stance on such activities, emphasizing that while encampments are prohibited on university grounds, lawful demonstrations are permitted except between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The institution underscored its commitment to fostering an environment conducive to teaching and learning while upholding the principles of free speech.
Additionally, three individuals were apprehended on the ASU campus on Friday in connection with the encampment, as reported by a source familiar with the situation.
