Revenue has revealed that over 650,000 PAYE customers throughout the country are owed an average of €624 each in tax returns.
The Irish Independent reported that the number of taxpayers due a refund is 150,000 more than last year, equating to €104m.
All Pay As You Earn (PAYE) customers must complete an Income Tax Return in order to claim additional tax credits, reliefs or expense, declare additional income, obtain a Statement of Liability for the year, claim refunds of any tax or Universal Social Charge (USC) overpaid and to confirm any liability of any tax or USC underpaid.
Annual income return numbers have shot up since changes were introduced in 2019.
Over 200,000 people have claimed the rental tax credit since its introduction last year, which runs each year from 2022 to 2025, with single occupancy tenants availing of €500 and couples eligible to claim €1,000. Revenue stated that not everyone eligible has claimed.
The majority of claimants are in their 30s or 20s, figures show.
Revenue stressed that an additional 148,400 taxpayers submitted an income tax return last year over the previous year, however those who are still yet to submit one must be cognisant of time limits in place.
"Income Tax Return submissions must be made within four years after the end of the tax year to which the return relates. From January 2023, you can submit an Income Tax Return for the years 2019-2022," the Revenue website states.
