6 ways to save money at Tesco - including Aldi price match and Clubcard deals

From using your Clubcard, to getting cashback on your shop, we explain how to save money at Tesco.

It's the nation's biggest supermarket with more than 4,000 stores in the UK.

But with grocery shops becoming more expensive everywhere you go, customers are understandably looking for ways to cut back.

Food inflation - which shows the change in prices - currently sits at 16.7%, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Prices are being pushed up across all the main supermarkets due to retailers having to pay more for energy, staff wages and suppliers putting costs up.

Here are six ways to save money at Tesco.

Don’t forget your Clubcard

Tesco Clubcard holders get reduced prices on certain products in stores through its “Clubcard Prices” initiative.

All you need to do is scan your Clubcard, and the lower price will automatically be applied to your bill.

The deals on offer change from week to week and they're advertised with a big yellow circle in stores and online.

As an example of the money you could save, you can currently get a 500g jar of Dolmio Bolognese sauce for £1.50 instead of £2.20.

Or a Chicago Town pizza weight 439g is reduced to £3.50 from £4 for Clubcard holders.

Of course, Tesco Clubcard members also get money back on their shops when they build up points.

For every £1 you spend on groceries, you get one point, or if you're buying fuel, every £2 you spend at the pump is worth one point.

Tesco shoppers collect points through Tesco Bank and Tesco Mobile as well.

You need a minimum of 150 points to get a Clubcard voucher, which will be worth £1.50 to spend in Tesco.

You can get more value out of your points by using them with a “Reward Partner” - such as Hotels.com, Pizza Express or Thorpe Park.

Points are currently worth triple their value with a “Reward Partner” but this will go down to double their value from June 14.

Save money on Tesco deliveries

If you need to have your Tesco shop delivered, see if you can save money through one of its delivery schemes.

How much money you could save depends on how often you currently have your groceries delivered.

Tesco currently offers six-month and 12-month plans.

You'll pay £2.49 a month for anytime click and collect, £4.99 a month for off-peak deliveries and £7.99 a month for anytime deliveries, under a six-month deal.

For the 12-month plans, the price is £3.99 a month for off-peak deliveries and £6.99 a month for anytime deliveries.

Tesco normally charges between £2 and £7 for a one-off delivery or click and collect slot.

Get cashback off your shop

Cashback site TopCashback.co.uk is giving new Tesco customers £6.80 off their first click and collect shop over £25.

Similarly, Quidco is offering £5 cashback for new customer click and collect orders, also over £25.

Quidco users can also get other deals, such as 8% cashback on free from products and 7% off toys and games.

In order to be eligible for cashback, you'll need to click through the link on the cashback website, which will redirect you to Tesco.

Once you're on the Tesco website, place your order as normal and the cashback website should track your spend.

Of course, you do need to meet the terms and conditions first to get the cashback - so make sure you read them carefully.

Join the Tesco Christmas Saver scheme

Tesco shoppers can start saving for Christmas right now through its Saver scheme.

You need to be a Clubcard member to take part, as it involves saving up your points throughout the year to use at Christmas.

The perk is, you can also top up your account with cash, which will earn you bonuses in the form of Tesco vouchers.

You get your bonus in your November statement and they'll be valid for two months to use.

Bonuses are up to 6% with a maximum pay out of £12. The maximum amount you can put away each year is £360.

Here is how the bonus is calculated:

  • £1.50 bonus when you save between £25 and £49.50
  • £3 bonus when you save between £50 and £99.50
  • £6 bonus when you save between £100 and £199.50
  • £12 bonus when you save £200 to £360

To sign up, log into your Clubcard account and select the Clubcard Christmas saver option.

Search for Aldi price match products

Tesco has price matched hundreds of products against Aldi, with the promise of being just as cheap as the discounter.

Products included in the initiative are staples such as rice, bread, butter, as well as vegetables and fruit.

They're marked with a red Aldi price match sticker in stores.

If you're shopping online, type in “Aldi price match” on the Tesco website and the supermarket will bring up every product that is the same price or cheaper.

Tesco says it sends researchers to Aldi stores in England, Scotland and Wales twice a week to check the prices.

Stick to the bigger Tesco stores

Shopping at smaller Tesco Express stores instead of its larger shops could be costing you hundreds of pounds a year.

This is according to a price comparison study published by Which? last month.

It discovered people buying the same 75 items at Tesco Express, including Anchor Spreadable Butter, a Hovis white loaf and own-brand milk, would be spending an average £15.73 extra a week.

This adds up to £817.91 over the year, compared to those shopping online or at a larger Tesco store.
