Manchester United have given a number of academy talents a chance to impress in first-team training, with several more established members of the squad away on international duty.
Portuguese trio Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot have a big World Cup qualifying test as Fernando Santos' depleted side host Turkey on Thursday. Victor Lindelof and Anthony Elanga are also in play-off action for Sweden, with the latter called up for the first time, while others are involved in qualifiers or friendlies.
Captain Harry Maguire has joined up with the England squad, along with fellow defender Luke Shaw, but there's no place for fellow Euro 2020 finalists Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. The forwards have instead returned to club training, and Rashford has sent a message after being left out by Gareth Southgate.
"Putting in the work" was the caption on Rashford's Instagram post, with the forward sharing a number of photos. Senior figures Lee Grant and Nemanja Matic, with the latter having retired from international football, but there were also a number of youngsters present.
Here, Mirror Football gives the lowdown on a number of the academy players given an opportunity by the Red Devils' coaching staff. The group includes one youngster with first team experience, plus a few others yet to be handed a bow by Rangnick.
Marc Jurado
Teenage full-back Jurado has been on United's books since 2020, after leaving Barcelona to move to England. He had been associated with La Masia since the age of seven, following in the footsteps of Spanish international right-backs Hector Bellerin and Sergi Roberto.
After mostly featuring for the under-18s in his first season with United, the 17-year-old has featured more for the under-23 side in Premier League 2 this term. He also scored his first goal for the under-18s this term, captaining the side against Stoke City and scoring in a 4-2 win.
Jurado started all six games in the Uefa Youth League this season as United reached the last 16 before being eliminated on penalties by Borussia Dortmund. He was also handed a Papa John's Trophy bow in October, coming off the bench in a defeat at Sunderland.
Connor Stanley
Stanley hasn't featured in this season's Papa John's Trophy, but he did make an appearance in last season's competition. And the man he replaced that day at Salford, Hannibal Mejbri, is now a full international preparing for a two-legged World Cup play-off with Tunisia.
The 20-year-old winger was sent out on loan to Atlanta United II for the 2021 season in the United States, playing in a team managed by former West Ham United and Wales midfielder Jack Collison. However, he has returned to United's under-23 side in 2022 and scored his first goal of the season in February.
"What a 6 months," he posted on Instagram after a goal and three assists across 27 USL Championship games. "I would like to thank @atlutd2, the staff and all the players for this amazing experience and one that I will never forget. To be able to get back playing football and back doing what I love."
Charlie Wellens
The son of former United academy graduate Richie, Charlie Wellens has been around the first team before. When he was just 16, the talented youngster trained with the first team ahead of a Europa League clash with Astana under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
An option in midfield or defence, the 19-year-old has impressed plenty of people. Not least former United boss Jose Mourinho, who was reportedly keen to bring the Englishman to Roma for a reunion with one-time Old Trafford regular Chris Smalling.
Wellens is still yet to make his senior debut for Rangnick's team. However, with six Premier League 2 assists this season and three run-outs in the Papa John's Trophy, he'll hope to make the step up soon.
Joe Hugill
Signed from Sunderland at a considerable cost in 2020, Hugill came with a strong reputation.. And, while he has yet to play a first team minute, the striker caught the eye of previous manager Solskjaer with his exploits for the under-23s.
"If we go from that game [against Liverpool ], I'd pick Joe Hugill," Solskjaer said in February 2021. "Four goals by Hugill, he's a top striker as well, we're looking forward to seeing his development."
Still just 18, Hugill has had a more stop-start season this term with an ankle injury keeping him out of action earlier in the campaign. However, he was still able to add another hat-trick to his CV, helping United's under-18s win 5-0 at Newcastle.
Mateo Mejia
After a lengthy back-and-forth with previous club Real Zaragoza, Mejia became a Manchester United player in 2019. The Spaniard set the club back £130,000, with Zaragoza issuing a statement suggesting no agreement had been reached before the move was eventually sealed.
Now 18 years old, Mejia - who is also eligible for Colombia at international level - scored his first goal for the under-18s in September 2020. This season has seen him play his first minutes in Premier League 2, as a substitute for Dillon Hoogewerf in a draw with Chelsea.
His progress at United has been interrupted by injury, and he missed a number of months during the 2020-21 season. The striker is on the way back, though, and involvement with the first team will surely help.
Shola Shoretire
The only member of the sextet with first-team minutes under his belt, Shoretire has featured under both Solskjaer and Rangnick. He made his Premier League debut in February 2021, replacing Marcus Rashford from the bench in a victory over Newcastle, and also earned a run-out as a substitute against Young Boys in this season's Champions League.
"Dreams really do come true," the forward wrote on Instagram after his debut, which was followed by further first-team appearances last season and this. Shoretire was still just 17 when he made his European bow against Real Sociedad in last season's Europa League, while he also got minutes on the final day of the league season against Wolves.
This season, the teenager has continued his development in Premier League 2, impressing in Neil Wood's squad. With six goals and seven assists, he has helped Wood's side fly high in the table, while his performances have also earned him continued England under-19 recognition.
