55% of state legislatures are Republican, 45% Democratic

At the beginning of March 2023, 55% of all state legislatures in the United States are Republican while 45% are Democratic. There are 7,383 state legislative seats in the country.

Republicans control 56 chambers, while Democrats hold 41. The Alaska House of Representatives is the only chamber organized under a multipartisan, power-sharing coalition.

Democrats hold 856 state Senate seats and 2,431 state House seats, gaining four seats since last month. Republicans hold 1,110 state Senate seats and 2,947 state House seats, gaining six seats since last month.

Independent or third-party legislators hold 25 seats across nine different states, including 21 state House seats and four state Senate seats. There are 14 vacant state House seats and three vacant state Senate seats across 17 different states.
