54.82% of state legislators are Republican, 44.34% Democratic

At the end of November 2023, 54.82% of all state legislators in the United States are Republican while 44.34% are Democratic. There are 7,386 state legislative seats in the country.

Republicans control 57 chambers, while Democrats hold 40. Two chambers (Alaska House and Alaska Senate) were organized under multipartisan, power-sharing coalitions.

Democrats hold 853 state Senate seats and 2,423 state House seats, losing no seats since last month. Republicans hold 1,108 state Senate seats and 2,938 state House seats, losing no seats since last month.

Independent or third-party legislators hold 27 seats across seven different states, including 22 state House seats and five state Senate seats. There are 26 vacant state House seats and nine vacant state Senate seats across 22 different states.

Compared to November 2023, Democrats have lost three state Senate seats (854 v. 851) and gained 26 state House seats (2,398 v. 2,424). Republicans have gained three state Senate seats (1,108 v. 1,105) and 23 House seats (2,918 v. 2,941).
