As good as the Ohio State football program has been on the field the last few years, I’m not sure it gets enough credit for what it does in the classroom and off of it. Case in point: According to an OSU release on Tuesday, a whopping 51 players from the football team were named OSU Scholar-Athletes for the 2021-2022 academic year.
To be considered an OSU Scholar-Athlete, a player has to maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above. The program has had four consecutive semesters under coach Ryan Day with a team cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. The cumulative GPA for this spring semester was 3.05. The current GPA for all the scholarship players is a very impressive 2.998.
All told, according to an OSU spokesman, ten have been an OSU Scholar-Athlete at least three times, including five-time honorees and current members of the team, linebacker Cade Kacherski and Longsnapper Bradley Robinson. Kacherski has already graduated with his degree in finance and Robinson has his degree in human nutrition. Both are now working towards their master’s degrees.
Even more impressive, earning OSU Scholar-Athlete accolades for the fourth time are wide receiver Kamryn Babb, linebacker Ryan Batsch, defensive end Tyreke Smith, and defensive tackle Taron Vincent. Those honored for the third time include quarterback Jaggar LaRoe, offensive lineman Harry Miller, linebacker Teradja Mitchell, and offensive lineman Ryan Smith.
