50p coin sells for £400 and one could turn up in your change

A 50p coin has sold for £400 on eBay and there are many more still in circulation.

The coin features a portrait of Peter Rabbit and was minted to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter in 2016.

There are an estimated nine million in circulation.

A batch of Peter Rabbit coins first entered circulation in the Lake District and a few other British locations related to the works of Beatrix Potter.

People later began to sell them on eBay, with some having fetched as much as £1,000 on the auction site.

Last month, one lucky seller received £400 for theirs.

A total of 24 offers were placed, with the eventual sale price jumping up considerably from an initial 99p.

The item was listed as: "The very first coin in the Royal Mint series of Beatrix Potter coins. Dated 2016.

"Peter Rabbit. In excellent condition with no marks or toning. In original Royal Mint packaging with certification."

It's not the first time in recent months a 50p coin has sold for much more than its face value.

In January, a special 50p commissioned to mark the UK leaving the European Union (in January 2020) sold for £650.

If you find a coin you believe could be valuable, you can check with the Royal Mint if is it real.

It is worth noting, though, the Royal Mint is not able to value your coin.
